Kenzie – Big Goals And A Big Heart

Mackenzie “Kenzie” Hyde is our Events and Partnerships Officer as well as vice president of the student organization. She is also the PRSSA account coordinator working with Soma. She will be a senior public relations student in the Fall of 2020. Her minor is in Events and Experience Management.

Kenzie is a former resident of Mozaiko, a living-learning community in which domestic and international students live together to learn new languages and experience various cultures. She first met Mohamed in December of 2019 when he presented Soma International to students at the Mozaiko Service Initiative meeting that Kenzie was leading. By the end of his presentation, she knew she wanted to be a part of Mohamed’s team.

While growing up in upstate New York, Kenzie was well aware of the power of education in her life. She felt very inspired by education because her school was always the epicenter of her intellectual and social growth. She joined Soma to ensure every student has the opportunity to grow their identity.

Within Soma, Kenzie focuses on planning fundraising and outreach events, and creating connections with different individuals and organizations to facilitate partnerships. She also assists with the social media efforts for the organization. In the near future, she will also be contributing to Soma’s Facebook and Instagram Live book readings.

Outside of Soma, this past semester, Kenzie was an account coordinator for the Ut Prosim Firm at Virginia Tech (a pro bono public relations agency through PRSSA). Next year, she will fill the role of community outreach executive for PRSSA at Virginia Tech.

For fun, Kenzie enjoys playing tennis, swimming, yoga, hiking and volunteering at animal shelters. She is passionate about animals and sustainability. She is currently completing internships with a solar energy company as well as a nonprofit dedicated to teaching cooperative listening techniques to improve people’s relationships and business operations.

Kenzie always had an interest in the different ways people learn and how to teach to these strengths. She has a deep love for people, as well as for education. Thanks to Soma International, Kenzie has been able to make essential connections with caring people who have become a big part of her life. She is grateful for Soma, where she has found an outlet for her creativity and her desire to help others.
